M.A. Intercultural Communication

Certified Practitioner, STAR

Somatic Experiencing (SE) Practitioner-in-training

Languages: English, Tajik, Dari, Turkish (limited) and Arabic (basic)

Charlotte grew up in a family of humanitarian aid workers in Central Asia, and has been immersed in the world of cross-cultural work, reconciliation, and resilience from a variety of angles for over 20 years. She has lived and worked in Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Jordan, as well as all over the United States.

Her work focuses on developing individual and community resilience in the wake or in the face of traumagenic circumstances. She works with Petra’s front-lines peacebuilding teams to:

●     Develop personal trauma-awareness and resilience skills
●     Strategize organizational models for building resilience
●     Educate leaders on practical methods for relating to traumagenic situations
●     Develop context-appropriate models for increasing resilience
●     Write curriculum and implement models and trainings that are sharply context-specific
●     Release physically stored memories of trauma in individuals and groups

Charlotte’s life experiences heavily influence her theoretical work, and she is rooted in embodied practices that have transformed her personally. She has worked her way into resilience training from the inside out. Through processing her own experiences, stored trauma, and organizing attempts, she discovered the theory and developed her own resilience training model that now frames all of those experiences as transformative teaching material.

Having worked with her own past and physical manifestations of trauma, her facilitation and training are highly intuitive. She works with the body, as well as the memory and mind.

In the rapidly-growing field of somatic strategy and resilience, Charlotte is hungry to keep learning. She sees each training opportunity as a chance to refine theory and to adapt current models to be more culturally-inclusive.

In addition to her resilience work with our peacebuilding partners, Charlotte offers:

●     Cross-cultural competency training (general and regionally-specific)
●     Intercultural pedagogy coaching
●     Storying for teaching/learning workshops
●     Trauma-informed Mysore (yoga) rooms and bodywork
●     Culture- and Context-appropriate curriculum development

Charlotte is currently based at The Watershed Center in New York, USA.

Testimonials

“There are two kinds of teachers: the ones who teach from the brain, and the ones who teach from the belly. Charlotte is the kind that teaches from the belly—she has thoroughly digested every concept and idea; it’s not just theory to her. It’s much better to learn from this kind of belly teaching. I have been to many trainings in the last 30 years of my career, and I can clearly say this was the most useful one.”
- Central Asian Development Leader (Afghanistan)

“The resilience model Charlotte brought to our team was better than anything I’ve ever worked with. She developed an approach that was insightfully relevant to our cultural context, and we are already planning to apply it across the country in our regional teams.”
- Central Asian Peacebuilding Team (Afghanistan)

“Working with Charlotte has transformed my capacity and strength in ways I never even hoped for. I started with her out of a desperate place, and even my family says that our progress has completely changed my life. I have my body back. I walk and talk differently, I even think differently.”
